Autumn is the time of year when your looking for ways to make your home feel warm and cosy. Most people think that when it comes to cleaning and decluttering it should be done in the spring, but I like to declutter and deep clean at the beginning of autumn ready for the holiday season, that way my home is clutter free and ready to decorate.

At the beginning of fall I like to go through my wardrobe, kitchen cupboard and airing cupboard to purge or store summer items away for next year. 1. Declutter your wardrobe

declutter for autumn

The first thing I like to do when decluttering my wardrobe, is to get everything out and lay it on my bed. Then look at each item to see whether it fits, if I haven’t worn it within the past year or it it has any stains, rips or holes. If its damaged then I will toss it. If it’s something I haven’t worn in the past year or doesn’t fit I like to donate or sell it.

The clothes I want to keep for the warmer seasons, I like to store in vacuum pack bags then store them under my bed. All the clothes that are for autumn and winter. check if they need to be clean or repaired before hanging them in your wardrobe, that way they are ready to wear when you want.

2. clean your fridge and kitchen cupboards

Decluttering and deep cleaning your home for autumn is the perfect reason to go through your fridge, freezer and store cupboards to get rd of anything thats expired, especially as the holidays come around you might be doing more baking and cooking than you usually do.

As you go through your cupboards it’s a good idea to make a shopping list of anything you are running low on or needs replacing. While there’s still nice weather it’s an ideal opportunity to check your lights work or detangle. Also there is so much to do to get your home ready the earlier you start the more time you’ll have time to enjoy the season.

3. Sort through autumn and christmas decorations

With the holidays approaching now is a good time to take stock of what you have and check everything works. I recommend doing this during autumn as the weather is still nice to check any outdoor lights.

Every fall I like to get out all my decorations, check they all work and untangle any lights. That way if you’re when Halloween or Christmas comes around there will be one less thing to think about, especially if you’re planning to entertain guests this holiday season.

4. garden items

As the weather starts to get colder it mght be time to pack away your garden furniture and tools: Storing away garden tools and furniture keeps everything on great condition ready for next year.

Wrap and store any cushions or soft furnishings to stop them from damage over the winter months. Throw away any broken or damaged garrden toys. Wash thoroughly your barbecue ready to store for the autumn winter seasons.

5. organise and declutter your linens

At the beginning of autumn I like to switch my duvet up for a higher togg and swap out my bedding. Anything that I won’t be using over the winter I store away in vacuum packed bags, if you don’t have any you could store them in suitcases until your ready to swap them out again.

As you sort through your linens, anything worn or has tears can be recycled or thrown away. Before storing any linens you can give them a wash, so they are fresh when you get them out again. A tip is to place a couple of dryer sheets in with them to help them smell nice.

6. paperwork

It’s so easy to let paperwork pile up. I know, with a busy schedule and life getting in the way, it’s so easy to put paperwork in a pile to deal with at a later date. But if you’re wanting to sort and file your paperwork this is a great time.

Go round your home a collect all your paperwork into one place. You should then sort into piles of paperwork that need to be kept and filed, shredded or anything that needs actioning. Anything that you no longer need should be shredded, such as utility bills or bank information.

Create a filling system with important documents that you need to keep, something that will keep everything organised and safe if you need to refer back at any time.

Going forward think about going paperless, this cuts down on clutter and keeps everything on one place. A great way to do this is to set up different files on your phone or computer for different paperwork, for instance one for bills, one for medical and one for general household paperwork.

7. bathroom products

Every season I like to sort through my beauty products. As the seasons change so does your beauty needs. I like to swap out light weight moisturiser for something a little heavier.

When you go through each product, I recommend checking expiry dates and tossing out anything that’s expired. You can see this by looking for the letter “M” to check how many months it has left. The types of products or colours may have changed over time, If there is something that you don’t think suits you any more consider gifting to friends or family.

8. entryway or mudroom

One area of my house that definitely need regularly decluttering is my entryway. The best way to declutter your mudroom or entryway is to take everything out and place only items that belong there.

If you have old shoes and sandals that you’re not going to use over autumn and winter, I recommend storing them in storage boxes either in a loft or under your bed. I always go through them to see if there are pairs that I’m not going to where anymore and I either donate them or sell them.
