This post is all about bathroom items to throw away
1. Empty bottles
Empty or nearly empty bottles take up so much space in your cabinets and shower caddy’s. Throw out all empty bottles and anything that has a small amount left in the bottom put to one side and use them up first.
2. Worn towels
If you have towels that have been torn, have marks or smell, it’s time to replace them. I like to cut them down to reuse them for cleaning round the house. They are ideal to use as dusters or for wiping down surfaces.
3. Expired makeup
Makeup and beauty products each have their own expiry dates, it’s normally around 1 to 2 years. However if you take a look through your makeup and anything that doesn’t smell right or anything that has become discoloured can be thrown away. Products that are past there best can cause skin irritations or eye infections.
Here are the expiry dates for different makeup products:
- Lipstick – 2 yesrs
- Mascara – 3 months
- Eye shadow – 1-2 years
- Foundation 1-2 years
- Eye liner pencil – 2 years
- Liquid eyeliner – 3 months
- Pressed power – 2 years
- Lip gloss – 1 year
- Cream blush – 1 year
4. Expired medications
If you’re someone that keeps their medications in the bathroom, take a look at them and check the expiration dates. If any of them are expired you can take them to your local pharmacy to dispose them responsibly. Also if you have cough syrups and any drops that have been open for a while then these could be disposed of too.
5. Old bathmats
One thing I like to replace regularly in my bathroom is my bathmat. Using it day after day it can become worn and shabby. If yours looks like it has seen better days, it’s time to chuck it out and get a new one.
6. Mouldy shower curtains
As shower curtains are continually getting wet and damp they can easily collect mildew. First try washing your shower curtain as it might you might be able to save it.
Begin by adding one half cup of chloride bleach to one gallon of water. Then completely cover your shower curtain. Leave it to soak for 10 minutes. Then wash it on a 30 degree wash in the washing machine.

7. Musty face cloths and flannels
Older face cloths and flannels that are past there best should be thrown away. After a while even after washing them they will need replacing. Bacteria and germs can build up causing them to be unhygienic. If they look or smell musty it’s definitely time to get new ones.
8. Old cleaning products
Take a look at your cleaning products to see if any of them have expired or past there best. Check which one use regularly use and get rid of the ones you don’t, are nearly empty or passed there expiry date. Keeping unwanted cleaning products takes up valuable storage space in your bathroom. Your cleaning products should have an expiry date written on the label or the base, but if not check if there’s a change in smell or discolouration it needs to be disposed of. Make sure you dispose of these safely as these can be harmful. I recommend checking with your local recycling centre to find out how to dispose of them.
9. rusty razors
If you have used or rusty razors they can be tosses out as keeping them can be unhygienic and a safety hazard. To dispose of them safely if it came with a plastic cap pop it on before placing it in the bin. If you have thrown it out or if it didn’t come with one, simply wrap the razor end with tissue paper and tape it to secure the end, then place it in the bin.
10. Sample/travel toiletries
Over time it’s so easy to collect a ton of miniature toiletries. Whether it’s from hotel stays or sample products you’ve been dying to try, after a while you will have quite a collection! If you’ve had them a while and your not using them, you might want to consider donating or throwing them away.
11. Unused/old toothbrushes
I regularly change my toothbrush every 3 to 4 months, but if the bristles look a little frayed or worn I will change it sooner. Keeping old toothbrushes can be unhygienic and makes your bathroom look cluttered. Once I have disgardrd the old toothbrushes I recommend cleaning the holder to prevent bacteria and germs from getting on to your new toothbrush.
