This post is all about moving hacks

1. Start early

As moving home is one of the most stressful things you can do, I recommend preparing as soon as possible. The more time you can give yourself the more organised and relaxed it will be. Anything you don’t need you can start to pack or donate.

2. Make a list

One of the best ways to ensure you’re move runs smoothly is to make a list. I don’t do anything without making list! I highly recommend it. This way you know what you need to do and keeps you on track. Include in your list what needs to be packed, what needs to be donated and people you need to contact before your move.

3. Hire movers

Moving can be expensive, if you can afford to do so hire professional movers. I recommend contacting more than one because they may not be available, also it’s good to get a few quotes to compare prices.

If this isn’t possible book a van or enlist the help of friends and family as soon as possible. This way when moving day arrives, you know how your going to move your belongings.

4. Move as much as possible before moving day

If you’re able to access your new property before moving day, you might be able to take some items that you want to keep but are not using to your new home before moving day. The less you have to take with you on moving day the better.

5. Keep a separate box for important items

When I move house I always use this moving hack. I keep a box with me with important and useful items, for example a kettle, some cups, a couple of towels and a notepad and pen. This way when you go to your new home you don’t have to open all the boxes at once searching for a kettle to make a cup of tea and have a shower at the end of the day!

6. colour code and label boxes

This hack is genius! I always colour code each box. Give each room in your house a different colour. That way when it comes to unloading boxes you are able to know which room each box will go in without having to through the boxes. When you get to your new home put a sticky note on each door with the corresponding colour.

7. Dont’ use boxes that are too big

It can be tempting to try and put as much as you can into a box, The problem with that is when it comes to lifting it, it’s too heavy! I always use medium size boxes and check the weight as I’m packing them to check they aren’t too heavy.

8. pack clothes and linens in suitcases

When it comes to packing clothes and linens I find it super easy to pack them into suitcases, that way you can save money on boxes, they make it easier to move. You can store seasonal clothes that you’re not going to use until your ready to use them.

9. declutter before moving

I recommend going through everything before you move to check what you want to take with you. If there are things that are broken take them to the tip or if there are things you no longer need you can donate or sell them. Sort through clothes, anything you are no longer going to wear you can sell or donate.

10. Don’t forget to take meter readings

It’s important to take metre readings for your utilities before you go to your new home. Take a photo of the number, that way when you come to submit them they will be on your phone and lost on a scrap of paper.

11. label cables and plugs

To make it easier when unpacking label each of your plugs and cables. This way save you time working out what cables belong to each appliance. I like to tie each cable with a band to prevent hem getting tangled.

12. Keep furniture hardware in storage bags

There’s nothing worse than not being able to find screws and hardware when it comes to assembling furniture in your new home! I recommend putting screws and hardware into a freezer bag when you are taking it apart then label the bag so you know which piece of furniture it has come form.

13. if your renting take photos before you leave

I have rented many times and I always take photos of the property when I leave, this way your old landlord can’t charge you for anything stains or breakages that weren’t yours.

14. Take the day off either side of moving day

Sometimes moving can take a lot longer than you expect or things can crop up you don’t plan for. I like to have a free day to run any errands, take any thing to the tip, grab more packing supplies. Believe me you’ll thank me when you can take your time and not have to rush about!

15. keep valuables with you

One of the best hacks is to keep all valuables with you on moving day. Put things like your banking information, passports and keys into a bag. Make sure you on’t put these on the moving van, you don’t want to loose these. This will keep your mind at rest during the day as you’ll know where your valuables are.
